While other apps may tend to lean towards labelling themselves as ‘halal dating’ or ‘halal dating apps’, BlendMatching is different because it operates on the fact that it keeps the traditional aspect of matchmaking along with a more modern take on finding a spouse for life.

On this week’s TMV Podcast, Chief Editor Salim Kassam spoke to Hoda Abrahim, founder and CEO of BlendMatching. BlendMatching is a Muslim online matchmaking platform that aims to help single Muslims find their spouse – not through swiping left or right on a semi-halal search app, but through registering and speaking to a matchmaker face to face, who will then personally go out and find a person with compatibility.

Hoda herself calls her platform a mix of both online ‘halal-dating’ and traditional matchmaking, with Muslims coming together to find a compatible spouse through being able to both use an online platform away from the often closed community outlets, along with having a halal matchmaker present to help navigate the process.
While other apps may tend to lean towards labelling themselves as ‘halal dating’ or ‘halal dating apps’, BlendMatching is different because it operates on the fact that it keeps the traditional aspect of matchmaking along with a more modern take on finding a spouse for life. While apps that focus on swiping left and right offer a form of instant gratification, Hoda believes that this, in the long run, may not offer long-term happiness.
“We focus on quality over quantity”, Hoda explained, referencing the fact that many previous halal dating apps focuses on a wide range of possible spouses to choose from instead of focusing on really getting to know one potential husband or wife. At BlendMatching, after filling out a detailed questionnaire, each participant will be able to engage in an in-depth video chat as well with a matchmaker, so they can better make an informed decision when choosing a potential partner to start talking to.
Discussing her own experience with rishta aunties, more traditional people in local Muslim communities who act as matchmakers for the young and single, Hoda explains that many of them “don’t understand what our generation wants…first generation Muslims are at a crossroads”.
As Muslims, many of whom live in the West, both struggle and thrive in an environment that promotes individuality while remaining true to their cultural and religious roots, individuals like Hoda are paving the way for a more fluid way of getting married. Being able to choose a spouse, while staying comfortable with a Muslim matchmaker, has created a whole new concept of finding a spouse.
Traditional matchmaking services are beginning to see a decline in younger Muslim circles, so this then begs the question: are Muslim dating apps also a thing of the past now?
