Bernie Sanders launched a tirade against the leadership of Saudi Arabia at CNN’s town hall meeting on Tuesday night, calling them “murderous thugs”.

Heavily critical of the rules of Saudi Arabia, Democratic candidate Sanders stated:

For years, we have loved Saudi Arabia, our wonderful ally. The only problem is the people who run that country are murderous thugs”.

Sanders said that rather than cosying up to “billionaire dictator” Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, he would bring Saudi Arabia and Iran together to resolve their differences.

Sanders also criticised the government in Israel, calling it “racist” and “right-wing”. He pledged to be a fairer arbiter of the Israel-Palestine conflict, by promising to bring both parties together under “the banner of justice”. He said that that US could no longer “ignore the needs of the Palestinian people” while solely favouring those of Israelis.

The senator’s campaign has promised to pursue a foreign policy focused on “democracy, human rights, diplomacy and peace, and economic fairness”. He has also pledged to “end US support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen”, and to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal.

Bernie for President?

Sanders’ campaign to become President of the United States is currently picking up steam, and he is now the Democratic frontrunner for the presidency.

Along with his foreign policy, Sanders’ manifesto promises a radical overhaul of the current political status quo. His flagship policy, Medicare for All, promises a national health insurance program to provide every American with comprehensive health care coverage.

Sanders is reported as being popular amongst American Muslims as well, following his long history of support for them. In the past he has criticised surveillance of Muslim Americans and has attacked President Donald Trump for his Islamophobic rhetoric and policy. He has also received endorsements from the Muslim Caucus of America. Following the endorsement by the Muslim Caucus, he stated:

Muslim Americans for generations have been part of the fabric of our American family. While Donald Trump has attempted to demonise the Muslim community, our movement is working to bring Muslims and people of all backgrounds together to create an economy, justice system, and political system that are rooted in human rights for all.”

Several high-profile Muslims have come out in support of his campaign to become President, such as Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.
