Whirling Dervishes are part of the Sufi Islam mystic tradition. It is practised as a means of abandoning ones ego and focussing on Allah (SWT). I had the opportunity to watch this religious experience in Istanbul – Turkey, whereby the audience was greeted warmly with delicious pomegranate tea.
The performance began with men playing instruments in a calming manner, reciting a few select verses from the Qur’an followed by praise of the Prophet Muhammad.Shortly after the dervishes entered in a series of bows, and slow, deliberate steps. It was evident throughout that the dervishes were truly immersed in the experience, emanating a feeling of peace.
