For the past seven years, Yemen’s people have faced severe levels of poverty, conflict, and starvation, with the situation only worsening as the international community’s aid struggles to keep up with the proportion of their humanitarian crisis.

Thankfully, there are many options to empower the people of Yemen through economic stimulation, one of which involves stimulating the production of coffee beans, considered to be one of Yemen’s most significant cultural exports.

Read to learn how you can bolster Yemen’s coffee farming when you donate to Yemen:

The Situation in Yemen

Since 2015, the conflict in Yemen has resulted in one of the largest humanitarian crises in recent history, with Yemenis lacking basic access to food, education, transportation, and more.

At current:

  • 24.3 million Yemenis (82% of the population) need humanitarian assistance
  • 16.2 million Yemenis (56% of the population) are expected to go hungry this year
  • 4 million Yemenis (14% of the population) are internally displaced, 1.6 million of whom are women and children

In addition to these shocking numbers, the cost of necessities like food continue to increase and internal safety within the country is nowhere near stable, making the urgency to donate to Yemen increasingly relevant.

With regards to Yemen’s economic situation

  • 14 million Yemenis (47% of the population) live on less than 2 USD per day
  • Yemen’s currency, the rial, has fallen in value by over 40% in compared to the U.S. dollar since 2021
  • Yemen’s GDP declined by 8.5% in 2020

How Coffee Farming Boosts the Yemeni Economy

In an environment of increasing chaos, little could be more important for an individual’s survival than attaining financial security and self-reliance.

Yemen is commonly believed to be the world’s coffee-production originator, and it continues to remain a global leader in coffee production — though its ongoing war has impeded its production and export efforts substantially.

Yemeni coffee farmers are consistently looking for new avenues for production and investment to continue their centuries-old tradition of coffee making and bolster the Yemeni economy through quality exports.

To donate to Yemen and its coffee farmers during this trying time is to empower its people and give them a ray of hope for their personal futures as well as their country’s future.

Our Work in Yemen with the Mokha Institute

This year, we at the Zakat Foundation of America have partnered with The Mokha Institute, a nonprofit organization that helps Yemeni farmers grow and sell coffee as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods.

Through our partnership, we have helped Yemeni coffee farmers address infrastructure needs, implement best practices and gain greater access to the global market for selling their coffee beans.

Our hope is to continue to expand Yemen’s coffee production and see Yemeni farmers become increasingly prosperous through sharing this beautiful tradition.
