An Incredible New Interactive Arabic Calligraphy Show Is Coming To London!

Syed explains: “I am intrigued by the idea that the materials I use in my practice contain the fabric of earth’s existence within them. We are all connected by the carbon in this black ink, as it is an ingredient in all things living.”

Soraya Syed, a London-based Arabic calligraphy artist, is premiering her show Sound & Silence at The Coronet Theatre as part of the exciting Shubbak Festival from June 23rd (Friday) to July 9th 2023.

Syed, a classically trained calligrapher and artist, is dedicated to bringing ancient forms of Arabic calligraphy to modern audiences today through her interpretation of film, three-dimensional sculptures, and VR.

In 2005, Syed became the first British person to be awarded the ijazah, or authoritative license to practice the art of calligraphy, from the renowned Turkish masters Hasan Çelebi and Efdaluddin Kılıç.

Using both digital and physical elements, Syed will be presenting an interactive and immersive experience of Arabic calligraphy within the broader humanitarian relation to nature at The Coronet Theatre.

Inviting the audience to engage with the different materials directly, this will be a groundbreaking experience with art – for example, there will be a mesmerizing installation with magnetite ink suspended in water, allowing the audience to move it around directly and create calligraphic-like shapes with shadows. In this exhibit, the audience will also become the artist.

Calligraphy, being such an important part of both Arab and Muslim heritage, is presented in an astonishing new way in this exhibit – and is a must-see for anyone in London! Syed is also providing Arabic Calligraphy Workshops to coincide with her show, which you can find here.
