An incredible event is coming to London, bridging together the ancient Japanese art form of the tea ceremony (sado) and Turkish spirituality. Led by Dr. Qayyim Naoki Yamamoto, a Japanese Muslim, this lecture and event will be held at the Yunus Emre Institute in London, on the 20th of June (Tuesday) at 7pm.

With a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, followed by a matcha tea tasting for participants and a lecture by Dr. Yamamoto, this event is an opening into a little-known but fascinating field of culture and Islamic spirituality.

Dr. Yamamoto, who specializes in Ottoman Sufism and traditional Japanese culture, will explore how Islamic spirituality – specifically in Turkey – has impacted him personally as both a Japanese and a Muslim person.

Currently an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Turkic Studies at Marmara University in Turkey, Dr. Yamamoto’s publications include a Japanese translation of Sulami’s Futuwwa and Introduction to Sufism: A Comparison with Shonen Manga. He is currently translating Yunus Emre’s poetry into Japanese.

Passionate to explore the similarities and bonds between Turkish and Japanese cultures, Dr. Yamamoto’s lecture and event at the Yunus Emre Institute is an incredible opportunity to better understand the vast variety of ways we can understand the balance between spirituality and culture as Muslims.
