What is the Allamah Tabataba’i Award?
Education plays a vital role in determining the destiny of each individual. More importantly it shapes the future of our communities. Nurturing, supporting and providing guidance for the youth is an essential stepping stone in building this future.
Religious studies alongside scientific disciplines go hand in hand to meet the needs of our world, both material and spiritual.
To encourage our youth in their quest for knowledge, Allamah Tabatab’i Award (ATAward) has been created to support young (GCSE & A-level) students who have succeeded in achieving the highest grades, in taking their next step into higher education.The members of the Academic Board, who are professional academics in UK Universities with substantial experience, will act as mentors to each of the selected students providing guidance and support in all aspects of their academic life.

Allamah Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Tabataba’i (1903-1981) is one of the most prominent contemporary Islamic philosophers and is famous for Tafsir al-Mizan, the Qur’anic exegesis. Allamah Tabataba’i was born in Tabriz, Iran, and was brought up in a family known for its scientific background, nobility, and honor. After his parents passed away, one of his kinsmen, known as Haj-Mirza Baqer Qazi, adopted the young Allamah Tabataba’i and his brother. Following the conventions of the day, Allamah Tabataba’i first studied subjects such as Quran and Saadi Shirazi’s Gulistan, and then went to school. During his life time, Allamah Tabataba’I travelled to number of places to seek knowledge predominantly in Najaf and later on in Qom .
During his blessed life Allamah Tabataba’I undertook and accomplished great works. Some of the most renowned works Allamah Tabataba’I is known for are: “Tafsir al-Mizan”, “Shia in Islam”, “Promotion of Writing in Hawza”, “Comprehensible and Practical Interpretation of the Glorious Quran”, “Discussions and Interlocutions with Western Philosophers”, and “Fighting the Philosophy of Materialism”.
In honour of this great scholar, The Islamic Centre of England is pleased to launch the inaugural ATAward, initiated to acknowledge and award hard working students. ATAward would provide students with inspirational leadership, guidance and support to improve their own future prospects and their communities.
The Award
The academic board will select a total of 12 (6 GCSE and 6 A-level) students to be awarded in a public event.
The students are selected according to their grades published by the UK education system.
GCSE selection criteria:
The highest number of A* and A in the subjects stated.
The top student will receive £500.00 in cash and the 5 runner ups will receive £200.00 each. All 6 students awarded will have the opportunity to be supervised and mentored for a period of 2 years under the academic board.
A-Level student selection criteria
The highest number of A* and A in the subjects stated.
The top student will receive £500.00 in cash and the 5 runner ups will receive £200.00 each. All 6 students awarded will have the opportunity to be supervised and mentored for a period of 2 years under the academic board.
All students who have achieved at least 3 A’s and 2 B’s in their GCSE’s or ABB in their A-levels will be given a certificate and invited to join the Allamah Tabataba’I mentoring scheme.
