A Sunni-led organization has launched a crowdfunding campaign for the tragic murder of three Shia and one Sunni Muslim in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The four victims: Mohammad Ahmadi (62), Muhammad Afzaal Hussain (27), Aftab Hussein (41) and Naeem Hussain (25) were murdered in a span of nine months.

CelebrateMercy started this campaign in the spirit of the Qur’an which instructs us to “Repel evil with that which is better” (41:34). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has also said: ‘Have mercy to those on earth, and the One in the Heavens (God) will have mercy upon you” (Tirmidhi).

When the individuals at CelebrateMercy heard about the murders, they leapt at the opportunity to help. Their online crowdfunding campaign has already reached over $42k in one week and continues to build bridges between Shia Muslims, Sunni Muslims, and friends of all faiths to stand up against violence and stand together in support of the victims’ families and communities.

In just one week, they acquired the support of over 600 individuals and 10 community organizations. All proceeds from the campaign hosted on LaunchGood will go directly to the families of each of the four victims.

No amount of money will bring back the families’ loved ones, yet CelebrateMercy and the endorsers of this campaign do hope to support the families in the best way they can in the spirit of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who has said: “The most beloved to God are those who help people most” (al-Muʻjam).

The campaign page will be regularly updated with information about media coverage, community partners, and the distribution of funds. See a complete list of campaign resources below.
