How many of us turn on the faucet to get fresh, clean water without even thinking twice? We use water to flush our toilets, take a shower, wash our clothes, and drink daily. If you really think about it, we use water for many parts of our day.

Now imagine not having any water in your home at all. Countless people in Texas had this happen during the winter storm a few weeks ago. It is not just hard to live without having access to clean water; it is almost impossible.

Yet, this is the heartbreaking reality for millions of us across the world. At least 2 billion people in the world are drinking contaminated water. Drinking contaminated water has devastating consequences. Unsanitary water conditions lead to water-borne diseases and even death.

Clean and safe water is a matter of life and death

A child dies from a water-related disease every two minutes, on average. These deaths are easily preventable with safe, clean drinking water. Yet, we have this global water crisis. As Muslims, we have a responsibility to ensure everyone has access to clean, safe water.

In our faith, giving water is considered the best form of charity: “The Messenger of Allah, on him be peace, was asked, ‘Which charity is best?’ He replied, ‘[Providing] water.’ ”
