“As long as we are trying our best, without any ulterior motive, God is pleased with the state we are in. All we can do is try, and if you get tired while trying, so be it. God will show mercy even while we are trying.”

Despite this year’s Ramadan falling amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheikh Datoo explains that even through difficulty, we can learn to love and appreciate God’s blessings even more. We can make the most out of our hardships – even though many have been laid off jobs and are financially and mentally going through difficulties, the Sheikh explains that we must remain committed to God.
We’ve always yearned for a little more time – now we’re solely focusing on God…only a handful of us really have an excuse now for delayed prayers or delaying time with God.”
During times of difficulty is when we can truly appreciate God, explains Sheikh Datoo. While we should not belittle the legitimate difficulties of those who have lost loved ones or lost livelihoods because of the pandemic, we must also appreciate that even times of difficulties are a blessing from God.
During times of ease we can forget God, but through difficulties we appreciate God more…even the difficulties are coming from Him.”
The month of Ramadan, in particular, is a special time for God’s mercy, explains Sheikh Datoo. So many acts of faith and devotion completed or even attempted during the month of Ramadan will inshallah bring God’s mercy down on us – and Sheikh Datoo explains that even when trying, that can be an act of devotion itself as well.
As long as we are trying our best, without any ulterior motive, God is pleased with the state we are in. All we can do is try, and if you get tired while trying, so be it. God will show mercy even while we are trying.”
Sheikh Datoo also expands on the topic of the Holy Quran during the month of Ramadan – and how we should reshape the way we view the Quran. We should not think of engaging with the Quran as simply reading it, Sheikh Datoo explains, and that we must instead be actively studying it. The Holy Quran remains a “continuous source of guidance”, he explains, meaning that it remains “the continuous speech of God”.
“Everything we ever need is in the Quran,” meaning we must strive towards realizing the infinite layers that the Holy Quran can offer us if we take the time to truly study the Holy Words of God.
