China’s most recent campaign of abuses against its Muslim minority has been to force them to consume pork and drink alcohol for the Chinese Lunar New Year, as part of its larger crackdown on Islam in the country.Â
According to Radio Free Asia and other on-the-ground sources, Chinese officials in the province of Ili Kazakh “invited” Muslim members of the community to lunar new year events, where they were forced to eat pork and drink alcohol. If they refused to participate, they were threatened with or taken to China’s infamous “re-education” camps, or detention camps. Chinese officials were also reportedly delivering pork directly to Muslim households and forcing them to decorate their homes with traditional Chinese new year decorations.
Human rights groups say there could be up to one million Chinese Muslims in these horrific detention camps, where they are forced to disassociate with Islam and declare allegiance to the Communist Party. Torture, death, and the disappearance of entire families are not unheard of. Han Chinese officials and civilians are also reportedly being sent to live with Muslim families in the province of Xinjiang, in an effort to infiltrate Muslim communities and report anyone suspicious.
This is all part of a larger Chinese “crackdown” on Islam in the country, with Chinese officials claiming that they are simply implementing a program of “anti-extremism” and “anti-separatism”. Their goal is to “reform” Islam within the country to have it more in line with the Chinese government and value system.
The fact that there have been serious allegations of human rights abuses, however, has stripped the Chinese authorities of any sort of legitimacy. This most recent case of abuses being done to Muslims during what should have been a celebration of the Lunar New Year has only further proved China’s incapacity for the protection of human rights.
