A man has reportedly stabbed a muaddhin in Regent’s Park Mosque in an alleged racist attack.

According to eyewitnesses and reports, the attacker charged into the mosque and stabbed the muaddhin in the neck during Asr prayer. The attacker was reportedly about to stab an imam but the muaddhin stepped in his way.

The knifeman has been described as a Caucasian man and unverified footage released on Twitter shows him being held by officers in the aftermath of the attack. Separate footage shows what appears to be a knife on the ground near him. Witnesses said he spoke with “a London accent”, as reported by Sky News.

A statement released by the Metropolitan Police has confirmed that police were called to the mosque at 15:10 hours today having received reports of a stabbing. Officers attended with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

The victim, said to be a man in his 70s, was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The attacker has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. According to the Mirror, while the incident has not been designated as a terrorist incident, Met’s SO15 counter-terror unit is looking into it.

According to Sky News, around 300 worshippers were said to have been in the mosque when the attack happened. People have taken to Twitter to lament the lack of safety for Muslims, even in their places of worship.

The attack comes just a day after a far-right extremist carried out shootings in Germany, killing at least nine people.
