The third largest mosque in the world, which is Chinese-built, is to be completed in Algeria.
Hailed as a “masterpiece of architecture” and a building that also “symbolizes the friendship between Algeria and China”, it is the third largest mosque in the world only after the Great mosques of Mecca and Medina.
“It is designed and built according to the standard that will withstand the test of time for a thousand years”, says Zhou Sheng, General Director of CSCEC Algeria.
“Some have accused us of building a temple for the extremists,” said Ahmed Madani, an adviser to the minister of housing responsible for the construction. “On the contrary, it will be a heavy blow for the extremists. They are the ones hostile to this project.”
He continues by saying that the new mosque “will not only serve as a house of worship. It will be a place where links between faith and culture will be reinforced thanks to its ultra-modern library and the Koranic school which will be open to some 300 students.”
The mosque will be completed this year.
