Muslim Council of Britain Issues Guidance Amidst Coronavirus

The Muslim Council of Britain also reminds communities that much of this advice is in line with Islamic tradition, as Abu Malik Al-Ash`ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Purity is half of iman (faith)” (Muslim).

The UK’s Chief Medical Officer has now assessed the threat by Coronavirus (COVID-19) as “moderate”, meaning it remains important for community centers such as mosques and madrassas to take the important steps necessary to stay informed and vigilant in helping stop this potential risk.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia announced that all Umrah pilgrimages entirely are temporarily banned, which includes visits to the holy sites of Mecca and Medina. The Muslim Council of Britain has advised that British Muslims with family or friends who have Umrah pilgrimage trips should contact their airline and tour operators/agents for further advice and guidance.

To help raise awareness and offer a clear understanding of what we need to know and what the risks are, the Muslim Council of Britain have compiled a useful page on their website which includes information on hajj/ummrah, and what mosques and community centers here in the UK can do. You can find their website here.

According to the NHS, following good hygiene practices are extremely important. They include:

  • Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and putting the used tissue immediately in the bin.
  • Washing your hands with soap and water often, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
  • If feeling unwell yourself, stay at home and do not attend work or school.

The symptoms of Coronavirus are a cough, high temperature, and shortness of breath. These symptoms, however, do not necessarily mean you have the virus as these are similar to other more common colds and flues. You can keep up to date with the latest information here.

If you fear you may have come in contact with someone with Coronavirus or that you may have it yourself, you can call the NHS emergency 111 number, which is specifically for issues around the virus.

The Muslim Council of Britain has recommend the following for mosques, community centers, and madrassas:

  • Have a full and ready supply of soap, hand sanitizer, and clean paper towels at all facilities.
  • Be aware of those who have travelled abroad and insure they are aware of the symptoms and procedures in the case of possible transmission of the virus.
  • Wash hands as soon as arriving at the mosque or community center, as well as before and after any food handling during events. Ensure washing hands before leaving the mosque or community center as well.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects within the mosque or community center.
  • Ensure all members and attendees are aware of these procedures and the symptoms/risk of the spread of Coronavirus.
