A truck bomb devastated a central area of Kabul near the Presidential Palace and several foreign embassies, in what is described as one of the deadliest explosions in the region in several years. Police and health officials confirmed that at least 80 people were killed and more than 300 wounded in the attack, whereas unconfirmed sources suggest that the numbers could be as high as 100 dead and over 500 wounded.
The explosion took place at the peak of the rush hour in Kabul where the streets were filled with civilians on their way to work, maximising the number of casualties. The German Embassy was heavily damaged in the explosion, and officials from the German, Japanese and Pakistani embassies said several of their staff members had been injured in the attack.
Residents in the area described hearing an explosion, and then a mushroom cloud filling the sky with a thick black smoke. Thereafter, the roads were sealed off by the Afghan security forces, and both residents and rescue workers rushed to the scene offering first aid and helping those in need.
As of now, the Taliban have denied all responsibility, but Afghan intelligence services believe a Pakistani group aligned with the Taliban carried the horrific bombing out.
Regardless, this is another harsh reminder that Muslims are themselves the biggest victims of terrorism.
