The mi’raj of the Holy Prophet is one of the sacred nights in Islam – this is the night that he travelled from Mecca to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, all the way to heaven and then back to Mecca.

As we remember and respect the many miracles of Allah and the importance of Prophet Muhammed and the night journey, here is a quick timeline to better understand this holy night:

Jibrail and Buraq Appear

The archangel Jibrail and Buraq, a heavenly horse, appear before the Prophet. The Prophet mounts the horse, while Jibrail advises Buraq to not cause any discomfort to the Holy Prophet.

Prayers at Masjid al-Aqsa

Buraq takes the Holy Prophet to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. He dismounts the horse, visits the various areas of the masjid, and other landmarks around it. He also leads a two-rakat prayer. The likes of Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (and all Prophets ever to exist) pray behind him.

Up to the Heavens

The Prophet is then taken to heaven. On his way there, he visits all sorts of celestial bodies, angels, and the spirits of the previous Prophets. He also witnesses the bounties of paradise and the terrifying nature of hell.

Sidratul Muntaha

The Prophet is reported to have seen Sidratul Muntaha, a heavenly tree, which is the closest one can get to Allah (not physically, but in terms of having deep understanding and knowledge of him). Not even the angels can reach this place!

Return to Mecca

The Prophet returns to Mecca, having learnt the adhan, ritual prayers, and having acquired an endless amount of spirituality.
